DIY Bug Spray – Does it work?

DIY bug spray - Does it work?

I am always looking for natural DIY products to try. With a little one in the house, another on the way, and having dealt with asthma my whole life, I hate the idea of having a house full of chemicals. Summer is also right around the corner and here in the south we are already feeling it. That means hot humid weather, afternoon rain showers, and LOTS of bugs! So, I took to Pinterest, looked up some natural bug spray recipes, found this one here by One Essential Community, and I decided to give a try.

I ordered some Lemongrass and Citronella from my favorite company, Rocky Maintain Oils. Then picked up this 4 oz glass bottle (aff link) and this witch hazel (aff link) from Amazon. I already keep distilled water on hand for my DIY Surface Cleaner, so I didn’t have to run out to pick that up, but you can easily find it at any grocery store down the bottled water aisle.

So how easy is it to make this bug spray?

Add 2 oz of witch hazel and 2 oz of distilled water into the glass bottle. You may need a funnel or measuring cup with a spout to make this easier. Then add in 15 Drops of citronella essential oil and 10 drops of lemongrass essential oil. Put the nozzle on the bottle and shake to mix. You will need to shake to remix each time before you spray, because as we know oil and water do not mix. 🙂

That’s it. Super simple to make, but I am sure you want to know now…

How well does it work?

All I can say is I LOVE it! The smell is amazing to me, but then again I love the smell of citronella and lemongrass. The feel of it is great as well. Actually I don’t even feel as if I put anything on. It dries quickly and leaves no sticky or greasy feeling to your skin. Now does it keep the bugs away? In my opinion, YES IT DOES! We have been outside several times and not once have I came in to find a bug bite on Nugget or myself, nor has either of us complained while outside that the bugs where bothering us.

This is a recipe I will try again and again, and would recommend you give it a try as well. You can also try out some of the other essential oil mixes used by One Essential Community in her bug spray by visiting the link to the recipe here. I just used these two oils, in these amounts, because I was using this on Nugget who is only 4 years old.

Have you tried a DIY bug spray in the past? If so, share a comment below to let us know how well it worked for you. If not, give this one a try and let us know what you think of it.

Nugget’s Big Sister Kit with FREE Silhouette Cut File

As the arrival of Sprout gets closer and closer I have been thinking about all the things I need to get checked off my list like getting the nursery ready, shopping for those last minute needs, and packing a hospital bag. But the one thing I have found myself most concerned about is Nugget and her transition into becoming a big sister.

As I am sure many second (even 3rd, 4th, etc.) time moms understand the worry that I am feeling. Nugget will be away from Mommy and Daddy longer than she ever has before, and seeing Mommy in the hospital is going to be hard enough without dealing with the idea that Mommy now has another being needing her attention.

I also know it will be hard for her to see Sprout getting so much attention and so many new things, and I don’t want her to feel like she is not as important or special. This is as big of a day for her as anyone else.

So to show her just how amazing she is going to be as a big sister I decided to make her a Big Sister Kit. I plan to fill this bag up with lots of her favorite goodies and have it ready for her when she visits mommy and baby at the hospital.

Big Sister Kit with FREE Silhouette Cut File

Some items I plan on putting in the Big Sister Kit are…

  • Color pencils or crayons
  • Coloring book or drawing pad
  • A personalized book about being a big sister (I am thinking about this book here)
  • Blind bags (her latest obsession in toys)
  • Her favorite Snacks
  • Camera, she has this camera (aff link) already so I will probably just throw it into the bag.
  • Big Sister necklace (here is the one I am planning to order)
  • Big Sister Shirt
  • A new DVD

UPDATE 4/23: I have purchased the Personalized book and the Necklace from the links above and I LOVE the products! The book’s story is super cute and comes with a medal for your little one to wear and show off. The necklace is perfect if you have a little one who loves accessories, like my Nugget does, and the quality seems sturdy.

So that is what I plan on putting in Nugget’s Big Sister Kit. I hope it helps her feel like the most wonderful big sister I know she is going to be. If you were making this kit up, what would you put in it? Comment below and let me know.

Oh , and no I didn’t forget…here is the Dropbox link for you to download the FREE Silhouette Cut File to use in making your very own Big Sister Kit. Just remember if you are cutting it out on heat transfer vinyl, mirror the image before you cut it.

Ultimate Springtime Bucket List for Kids

Ultimate Springtime Bucket List for Kids

Yesterday was the First Day of Spring! YAY! This got me thinking about some fun Springtime activities to do with Nugget! I had planned a few Spring and Easter themed crafts already, but I wanted to add more activities. Plus I wanted to get us outside to enjoy the nice weather before the crazy hot summer days of the South show up, forcing this pregnant Momma to retreat inside.

Now I know Spring does not always mean nice weather, so I have included some fun activities that are great for rainy days. These yucky days are perfect for making popcorn and watching movies, or even getting out in the rain to jump in mud puddles.

To keep all these wonderful activities fresh in my mind, and always at hand, I loved the idea of a printable bucket list. So at nap time I created our own Ultimate Springtime Bucket List. My plan is to slip this list into a photo frame to set out on the counter top with a dry erase marker. Now it is always in sight, reminding me of fun activities, and it allows Nugget the fun of checking the activities off as we do them.

Springtime

It wouldn’t be nice if I did not share this bucket list, so below is a printable for you and your family to use this Spring.  Make sure when you print you choose to print it in “Actually Size” and not to “Fit”. Then trim up with edges, put in your favorite 8×10 inch frame and enjoy the Springtime fun!

As always please comment below and let me know what you think of this list. Are there any fun activities you would add to it?

Favorite DIY Surface Cleaner Using Essential Oils

So I have spent this beautiful Sunday inside, all day, cleaning!!! After months of neglect, (thank you “morning sickness”) I finally had the urge and energy to clean the entire house.

Now before you judge, things did get wiped down, vacuumed, or had a broom taken to it here and there. This was all done thanks to a wonderfully understanding hubby, but today was the first time in a while everything was giving a deep scrubbing.

Now one of my favorite things to use when cleaning is a natural based cleaner. With asthma and allergies always rearing their ugly heads, chemical based cleaners get the best of me. So a few months back I got on Pinterest to search and after reading a few articles and recipes for a natural based cleaner I thought I would give a stab at making my own cleaner.  A bit of distilled water, some vinegar, and a few essential oils later and I had a wonderful surface cleaner.

I will say each of these ingredients has it’s own purpose, but I am no expert on this and would suggest doing your own research if this is a concern of yours. So, instead of boaring you with all that I figured I would share with you the top 3 reasons why I love this cleaner.

  1. This cleaner leaves everything smelling fresh
  2. It does not leave a residue behind
  3. It cuts grease better than any cleaner I have tried

Now that you know why I love this cleaner give the recipe below a try. Leave a comment and let me know what you think!
